IT'S UP TO ME
by Haim Ginott
I've come to the frightening conclusion that I am the decisive element in the classroom. It's my daily mood that makes the weather. As a teacher, I possess a tremendous power to make a child's life miserable or joyous. I can be a tool of torture or an instrument of inspiration. I can humiliate or humor, hurt or heal. In all situations, it is my response that decides whether a crisis will be escalated or de-escalated and a child humanized or de-humanized.

I've come to the frightening conclusion that I am the decisive element in the classroom. It's my daily mood that makes the weather. As a student, I possess a tremendous power to make a teacher’s life miserable or engaging, routine or fulfilling. I can be a tool of annoyance or an instrument of encouragement. I can ignore or cheer on, pay attention or get involved. In all situations, it is my response that decides whether a class exercise will be interesting or boring -- just because I asked a question that involved my passion or interest. I plan to participate and bring questions to class because it’s up to me.==========================
